Sunday Stills topic this week – Straight
My take on straight involves looking through the lens into nature.
Nature I thought would be a relatively easy subject – in which to find photographs with straight lines.
But, really is there such a thing as a straight line in nature?
Many would argue that there is no such thing as a straight line in nature.
Perhaps when a spider is dangling from his web, it creates a line, with the help of gravity.
Fields of wildflowers can create straight lines from a distance.
A forest of trees looks as if they are heading straight up. Or are they? Can’t see the wood for the trees. Within this photo is a building with an iron roof, it appears to be straight, which it is not. The edge of the roof is ridged as are all roofs made with corrugated iron.
Still, appearances are almost always deceiving. As we all know, straight does not always mean straight, and even the horizon line is in reality, curved.

Thanks Cathy, and I think much of what we view is some sort of an illusion. We lived on the Rangitikei Plains [countryside] in the Bay of Plenty. It looked flat, until we flooded and the water went up to our knees in places. So, now I never take flat-looking land at face value.

No indeed. Near where we used to live in Somerset there was a flat expanse called the Levels and that was always getting flooded.

Good point about the straight horizon of the earth (ocean) being curved! Of course I knew that, yet it never occurred to me when taking hundreds of sunset photos when we were sailing.

Liesbet, I think you had more things on your mind than horizons while sailing. That must have been an amazing experience. You and Nilla have much in common.

Yes. But she lived on a sailboat for decades. We didn’t even make one decade. For good reasons. 🙂
