10 Favourite Travel Photographs

A travel photography challenge when not travelling.

I was asked a while back by Deb at Debs World via Instagram to share my favourite all-time travel snaps. Well, that proved harder than I thought. Indecisiveness ruled for days until I decided to use photographs that I haven’t shared previously on my blog. Not all these photographs will necessarily be the best photographically, or our most memorable; all photos were randomly picked on the day I wrote this post.

Let me take you on a journey from when we had a home on four wheels to other trips’ when it was just a suitcase and us with various transport modes. All travel options from our backyard to the rest of the world was ours to appreciate, which we did.

One with nature – Aotearoa – 2007

This was one of those rare moments where luck and timing perfect themselves.

Lake Dunston, N.Z. – Motorhoming 2008

Wiling away summer down South way back when the sun shone more than it didn’t.

Western Australia – Motorhoming – 2010

Bland Bay – Northland, N.Z. – Motorhoming 2015

Late summer and catching up with friends – anything but bland was Bland Bay. This photo was also an example of myself the photographer not using my new lens correctly! As the photos are now too dark to use on a new computer.

Italy – Bologna – 2015

To say that Bologna was hot during the Summer of 2015 would be an understatement. The best part was the cooler hours of wandering the streets at night and the copious amounts of gelato and other amazing food that kept us going.

France – Winter/Spring 2016

Taking time out with our charges. It is an ordinary capture of an extraordinary time when we gained our first housesit in France for 3 months. The start of many more in France.

Porto -Summer 2016

This moment was captured walking near the famous Porto bridge which we had just walked over. It was a fun moment with memories of laughter and wonderment at how the Squire managed to get me to walk over that bridge when I dislike heights.

Aubonne, Switzerland – Housesitting 2017

On top of the best was housesitting in Aubonne. We were to do repeat housesits for Fudge and his family here and in Spain. It was a pleasure to explore both.

Spain – Winter – 2017

So much fun creating snowballs and I am happy to say I dodged that one heading my way.

Troyes, France – Roadtrip – 2018

This trip through some enchanting towns and cities in France was our last road trip in Europe. We left the Netherlands via train to Lille where we picked up a hire car before heading to a previous housesit (near Auvillar, Toulouse region) and our last for 2018 and decided to take a few weeks exploring through areas such as Limousin and Burgundy. Those petite villages and towns on hills were worth driving for miles to explore. Troyes was terrific, and at that stage, we had housesits organised just outside of Troyes for 2019 and a few in Italy. I wonder if we had done things differently, knowing what was ahead of us? Hindsight is a great thing.

  3. What fabulous memories and what a huge motorhome! I would never dare drive something that large. Even if you don’t get to return to Europe you have a fabulous country of your own to explore, not to mention that rather large island next to you.

Yes, Jude, you are right it was a huge motorhome at 10m to drive hence the reason I never drove it, NZ drivers would never be ready for me to be driving that on the road 😉 Luckily we explored NZ extensively while motorhoming though I am sure there are places we didn’t get to. No rush to travel at the moment, more of lives hurdles to jump over before contemplating travelling whether here or overseas.

  7. How lovely to see these special travel memories 🙂 Of course the dolphin shot has to be a favourite, captured with perfect timing! But I would also pick out your Bologna photo – it has just the feel of a warm evening in an Italian city, enjoying a stroll (passagiata) as everyone does over there 😀

    1. Cheers Wendy, right time right place. Bursts of camera shots help create more choice and hopefully a good one. The point I was trying to make it’s sometimes the least likely photograph that holds the most memorable memories 😊

  11. Hi, Suzanne – I absolutely love your response to the challenge that Deb shared with you. It was actually a blog challenge that I brought to Instagram (out of laziness…if truth be told)! I’m so glad that you brought this challenge back to the blogosphere where it originated. You did a brilliant job with it. Your photos are incredible. I especially like the one of Bologna — stunning!

That dolphin shot is amazing, and the colours and atmosphere you’ve captured in the others makes me want to jump on a plane and travel again right now! Thanks so much for joining in and doing this post, I loved seeing your highlights from your years of travelling the world. I often wonder the same thing, about hindsight, would we have done anything differently. Take it easy x

  14. Fabulous photos and memories, Suz! Love the colors in many of your photos.

    What a tough challenge. I could never pick the ten best photos of my travels. I would approach this challenge similar to you. Or, I would have to sit down, think hard, and first write down a list of highlights and then find suitable photos to fit the bill. Or, I’d have to remember the few exquisite photos I took of certain scenes and then hunt for them in my extensive photo archive.

    As it is, I had a hard enough time to go through my 33,000 (not a typo!) photos of the decade that I write about in Plunge, to pick around fifteen photos to put at the end of my book!

  15. I participated in that challenge and it was a toughie! But that dolphin lead shot…I’m speechless. And the pic of Troyes took me back to a lunch we had there on the way through to Burgundy. Lovely town.
