A-Z of NZ Locations – Upper Moutere

What’s famous about Upper Moutere?

Apart from the views of a picturesque mountain and a pub, there is not much as it’s a rural place and the quietness from city noises is to be treasured. It’s a place we’ve been through a few times to visit family in Takaka. Another visit is way overdue.

The region is home to New Zealand’s oldest pub (Moutere Inn) and weathered timbered buildings. Old rustic buildings are a photographer’s delight. Buildings such as the Old Post Office are now a treasure hunter’s joy, with homemade jams next to one-of-a-kind woven textiles and indoor plants in earth-fired pots. The area is heaving with creative souls and their various unique artworks, and this is one of the big reasons why I enjoy the upper South Island area.

Let the following images tell the story of a place not to be missed on a roadtrip.

Here’s an idea to make a tree stump look more creative.
Alternative house, something unique.
The countryside and nature at it’s best. Plenty of bush walks around this area.
An old hop kiln – craft beer and vineyards are popular in this region in more modern buildings than the one above, just in case you were wondering.
Langfords Store, which is situated slightly down the road in Motueka
A bird that is frequently sighted in this area – is the weka, a bird of the rail family.

    1. Many of our larger natives tended to be left alone down that part of NZ. In the more populous areas they were milled for housing. Some parts down that area is like going back a few decades, a lovely place to unwind.

    1. I, too, love the gentle air of dilapidation. There are so many creative souls around. Carving into old tree stumps is quite a popular art form, as I remember seeing a few around the UK and here in NZ.

    1. Thanks and yes I enjoy rustic buildings and especially a thriving art community. Yes, we do live down the bottom or is that the top? Worth the effort. Funnily enough many of us NZers love to travel long distance.
