If I were to pick
A model for us all
It’s the woman who’s always out there
Pounding down the court
And the gnawing teeth of time.
Ball dribbling fearlessly
Into her eighth decade.
A life’s work scored deep in her limbs
A faithful record of each season
Etched sharply in her face.
Resisting all beguilement,
Easy wins and level courts.
Undaunted by life
Wearing wisdom lightly
Committed to the labour
Unsung and unremarked.
Quiet courage, steel-cored
Who bends but never breaks.
And when the rest have quit
She will look around and smile,
renewing her grip
And onward down the court.

Today was my first day back playing basketball after the summer break. It was great reconnecting with my teammates, an incredibly supportive group of women who can be competitive, laugh heartily and be themselves. I truly feel blessed to be a part of it all. This poem is about one woman who continues to lead, inspire and motivate us to do our best.
So nice that you have found your tribe…even if you dribble a lot! 🙂 Melx

Haha, I’m wildly guessing that pun was intended. Good one, Mel 🙂 x

You brought a number of women to mind with this poem, Suzanne. Glad to hear you’re back on the boards.

Thanks, Eilene, it is good to be back. I love the chatter and getting to know them all a little bit more. Big plus is when we’re on court nothing else matters just that brown ball 🙂 Which I know I’ve shared numerous times. It’s important to have something that consumes us and blocks out the world for a short while. A stress relief of sorts.

That really is the best, when it consumes your full focus – and good exercise to boot!

Thanks, Tracy. I’m proud to be a part of it all. It’s kept me reasonably sane over the past few years. Jill is an amazing woman and all those who assist her. We range in age from late 50s to well over 80.

Great metaphor for life.

Agreed, Anabel. I believe there’s a thrill in doing what we love and constantly challenging ourselves. Plus, it’s a boost that helps us overcome self-doubt and keep pushing our boundaries out.
