Summer: Through Verse

It was one of those moments in the shower, you know, when that ray of enlightenment springs a surge of warmness, and acknowledging it wasn’t the hot water. The other day, I was remembering moments in life when it was at a slower, less cracking pace, like it is now. Those moments of life that are grabbed, absorbed and treasured. Only small and not of a grand nature, but oh, they leave a lasting love of living life as no other could do.

I remember creating a daisy chain

and the long grass where summer entered its own heart

I remember that we enjoyed a picnic,

walking down green avenues to the centre of the world.

I remember watching clouds crawl

across the afternoon where your face was in my eyes,

with the mingled smell of sunlit basil

and tomatoes from the garden.

I remember you driving through Central Otago

where grass was ash on the hottest day of the year.

How caught in circles, we missed road signs

until we found the dry streambed, blue with flowers,

glinting with fool’s gold, and we turned.

I remember those long cool drinks

such a relief on the last day of a hot summer.

Cover photo: the gorgeous model wearing the daisy chain is a dog we cared for in Devon. So laidback and photogenic. As were many of the animals we cared for back in the Housesitting Years.

    1. Thanks Jude, and we’ve been very fortunate to have some lovely memories to remind us when life was “healthier”. Les has just had a weeks respite care which is always good for us both. His system is stable at the moment. Thinking of you too and hopefully you get to enjoy more gardens to boost those endorphins.

    1. Thanks Anabel and it won’t be long before you’re basking in the summer sun. We were very fortunate to have cared some beautiful natured animals and the humans weren’t too bad either.

    1. We still live in hope, Eilene, of a few more warmish days and the luxury of cooler nights. A combination of places and moments that popped into my brain. I enjoy autumn and it is especially lovely down South where colour is spectacular.
