24 hours in Lausanne

When you think of cities in Switzerland, the clean and crisp Zurich probably springs to mind, followed by the business hub of Geneva.  It did for us.

While these are not without their own charm, we found the beauty and the unsung surroundings of Lausanne irresistible. This smaller city is situated on the edge of Lake Geneva and surrounded by cloud-covered mountains, it’s hard to imagine a more peaceful and calming city.

As we weren’t scheduled to be in Aubonne until Thursday morning, Lausanne seemed to be a great local choice to while away 24 hours.  Our last visit to this area was nearly 2 years ago.  Which was mainly to have a catch-up with a cousin, her husband and see where they lived in Geneva.  We did have an enjoyable time exploring a few places in and around Geneva which inspired us to revisit.

This city is absolutely fantastic if you want to give your gluteus maximus muscles a good workout, which is a positive thing.

To make it easier for the squire to get around this very hilly city, we used the free city transport courtesy of the hotel. The cynic in me automatically thought the big deal you have incorporated that into your room charge or general expenses.  The other part of me silently yelled “Yippee” something free!

On a more negative note, your travel budget will be stretched. This city is not cheap to explore if eating in cafes or restaurants is your thing to do!. Buying food from a supermarket or local market for a picnic is our way of saving money. Though of course, we do splash out for a good coffee or two with the required local sweet to keep our blood sugar level on an even keel!

Our next destination is Aubonne to commence our first Swiss housesit.

  3. Just came across your blog via Lisbet’s and am so glad I did, as I really enjoyed all these photos. Especially the ones with blossoms and architecture combinations. Lovely. Thanks for the tour and I look forward to reading more of you… Interesting house sitting all year round. We did home exchanges in Europe one after the other back to back over four months of winer two years ago. It was great!

    1. Thank you, Peta, for your kind comment. I am also enjoying connecting up with other fellow travellers and reading about their adventures. Yes, we love housesitting as slow travelling suits us. Isn’t the change of seasons such a fun time especially if you love taking photos as I do 🙂 The home exchange would have been an interesting thing to do. Look forward to reading your blog.

  4. Great post with terrific photos. Lausanne is a beautiful place isn’t it? Not been for a few years unfortunately but will make it back someday. Hope the next housesit goes well.

  12. Oh I do so love Lausanne! I stayed across Lake Geneva, over into the French border at Evian and everyday I caught the ferry across from Evian to Lausanne. I liked to wander around the gardens of the Olympic Museum that borders Lake Geneva. The lakefront at Lausanne is so delightful. Thanks for bringing back some lovely memories 👍

    1. Linda, I’m pleased it brought lovely memories back. I get the same feeling when reading other people’s travel posts, about places we visited years ago, which I haven’t blogged about. A positive side of social media is reading other people’s travel experiences 🙂
