This blog has taken you down countless Parisian streets, Spanish and Portuguese country roads, and narrow English lanes. It also includes strolls down dusty Turkish roads, gardens, backyards and public walkways, mostly to record pets living joyfully.
Today, though, we go somewhere completely different, where a tactful, sensitive approach is the best way to go. A cat understands.
Everyone knows, especially cats, that visiting hospitals isn’t the most pleasant experience, whether you’re a visitor or patient. I have visited our local hospital more times than I like to remember. To reduce my stress, I do a few things, one of which is to exercise before my planned hours of sitting.
On arrival, if I need to arrive by car due to torrential rain, I look forward to climbing several stairs; I dislike using lifts if I can walk. The highlight of this upward walk is the randomness of a wandering feline. If you like, he’s the unofficial hospital welcoming host with the most adorable face. Appears to keep school or daytime shift hours, meaning he’s here before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m. Inevitably, I like to engage; it’s fun.
Let me Introduce you to Steps.

Beside the Hospital Steps
I am not one
Of the wandering lost
No cattery for me
I belong beside the hospital steps.
I'm adored by many
Blessed with possessing
Two residential spaces
One beside the hospital steps.
Affectionate caresses
Quiet contented purring
Magically momentarily relaxed
Beside the hospital steps.
While striding forwards
Don't look back
I'll be working my magic
Beside the hospital steps.
Oh, what a sweetie.

I think so and very obliging when I was taking photos of him. Being a celebrity I suppose he’s used to it.

Steps is a beautiful cat and must really help many visitors feel calmer and welcome

I think he does and it makes visitors smile. He does have a loving family home not far from the hospital. He just seems to love being by the steps. One issue for the owner and mainly Steps, was the overfeeding which has now been addressed and apparently he’s lost a few kilos 🙂

Lovely poem, lovely cat. We used to have a Station Cat who was also an Honorary Purrfessor at the adjacent hospital. Sadly for us, his family moved away. I hope he got a new job to keep him occupied in his new location!

Oh thanks, Anabel and for your lovely story. Good to hear the feline species are spreading joy around the globe. Let’s hope that the Honorary Purrfessor did manage to obtain another position and didn’t retire.

I’m used to seeing cats in vet offices, but not at human hospitals. He’s adorable. I like the poem you wrote to commemorate him.

Thanks very much, Eilene. It’s fascinating how he’s claimed this spot and has a loving family waiting for his return whenever that might be. Oh, to be a cat 🙂

We have therapy dogs but I wonder if therapy cats would be a good idea too!

I think they would. Though many cats do as they please whereas dogs are pleasers 🙂 I especially think carehomes could do with my affectionate pets around them. Many of the residents would’ve had cats. Some places allow the new resident to bring their elderly cat too.

In the hospice where I worked I have known staff smuggle a cat in 😉
