Nūhaka is a small settlement in the northern Hawke’s Bay Region. It lies on State Highway 2 between Wairoa and Gisborne, which reminds me of a simpler time and a fun road trip from Gisborne to Napier.
She’s not a busy place with only one general store, a fish and chip shop, a local garage and a paua factory. It’s a place to stop the car engine and enjoy some fresh air while strolling to stretch your legs before getting behind the wheel again. The coastline is therapeutic, and the quirkiness makes you smile; a nod towards the school and hall being the community hub takes you back years to another lifestyle.

A post on the Hawkes Bay: Hawkes Bay Roadtrip
A general store and a fish and chip shop, what more do you need? Love that last photo.

Many people would agree with you. Yes, the simplicity of life on the coast has it’s merits. Thanks, Jude.

Thanks very much, Suzanne and I really appreciate your feedback. It has taken me years to gain confidence with writing and I love that I’m learning from other bloggers and writers on a daily basis. We could all do with more peace, couldn’t we.

It’s basic, it’s genuine and it’s the East Coast where kids go to the store riding horses. The scenery is beautiful.

It’s not every day that you see a pig and two cats walking on a beach! 😂

As someone who likes doing nothing much at times, Nuhaka ticks all the right boxes for me.

You might be surprised how busy life is there. You’ll be roped into every working committee even if it was only for your ability to make a good cuppa.

I love visiting the East Coast as I was born further down the road in Gisborne.

It really does look a place where time stood still.

In some ways, I think it is. I suppose it is similar to many small villages in the UK, where many are kept alive with the older generations plus a few younger ones staying on to farm or other enterprises around the district.

For a short while, too quiet for me, Jo. Like everywhere else in the world small towns or settlements aren’t viable to live in for many.
