Travel Photo Rejects #2

Art exhibition in a fieldSloten, Netherlands

This series of photographs, to be shown one at a time, was discarded onto a pen drive years ago when my blog was Globalhousesitterx2. They got pushed back down the pile, not rejected for subject matter, but more so that I had enough to write about.

Les is keeping warm while walking between the paintings.

One such experience on a rather cold autumn day, while we were cruising around the Friesland Canals, was an outdoor art exhibition on the outskirts of Sloten, the Leeuwarden European Capital of Culture 2018.

Artist Dirk Hakze developed a special idea to compose a triangle of 499 painting panels in a meadow near the Frisian town of Sloten. An artist painted each panel, which eventually became a colourful field performance.

Viewing and appreciating art has always been a highlight for me while we were travelling; locally, it’s still a pleasurable pastime. A local art exhibition in Te Puke, approximately 24 km from our place, held a similar event during a miserably wet Easter this year, prompting this post. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see it. However, I’m already looking forward to the possibility of another exhibition next year, which might be more promising.

Have you been to an outdoor art exhibition lately?

    1. It was indeed a different experience. I prefer to wander around a sculpture garden than a paddock. One bonus is the lack of holes created by the previous occupiers 😉

  1. Going through photo archives can produce wonderful memories can’t it. Love all those art paintings in the fields Suzanne. How fabulous! We’re currently in a one horse town in NSW that’s full of murals, colourful storefronts and quirky art.

    1. We actually saw another one similar to this in France though it was on a street not a paddock. Eilene, to be honest I can’t remember whether they were for sale or not. I would imagine they would be.

  2. That’s a lot of effort! A bit overwhelming so close together but I’m sure you had favourites. I’m trying to remember but I don’t think I’ve been to an open air event of that kind. Sculpture parks, yes, and sometimes photographic displays. Always interesting. It looks like Les needed a hot chocolate afterwards xx

    1. I did have a few favourites, like the one of a Scottish Highland cow. Les was fine though he did look cold, hence why I never used that image in a previous post. Anyway, I think there was food and a hot drink not long afterwards xx

  3. That’s amazing. So much variety, and it must’ve taken a lot of organising to make them stand up to the weather. I always look for art exhibitions and gardens when travelling
