Travel Photo Reject #5

We were fortunate to travel to Italy in 2006 and various other countries with Les’s sister and her husband. Our small orchard/olive grove was well-maintained, and Les had time off from his job at Norske Skog in Kawerau. It was the perfect opportunity for some fun, and I even managed to convince Les to wear a differently coloured shirt than his preferred blue.

Heading into the hills of Florence, he has always been a thinker, and several younger family members have followed his example.

Italy, 2006 and that green shirt. At the very least, I could see my 6’4′ husband in a crowd, and the shirt assisted me with that. Yes, I was the one who always walked faster and got excitedly immersed in the next attraction before anyone else was ready. This revelation won’t be something new to those who know me.

Spot the green shirt at the statue of Carlo Alberto in the Quirinale garden, Rome.

To include a shot of Florence, here is the iconic statue of David, with my sister-in-law and me smiling in front of it.

I’ve promised Les that I will continue to make plans for future adventures, no matter how small; perhaps heading back to Italy will be one of them.

    1. We have visited numerous cities since then and Florence is till a favourite. One positive was that the crowds weren’t so overwhelming back then. You’re right, Neil, Florence is beautiful.

  1. My sister is in Italy at the moment, immersing herself in catching up with family who live there, and Aussie-based family who all congregated for my auntie’s 100th birthday (which she missed by six weeks). I’m consumed by jealously. I could have joined them, but my funds were also consumed by the trip to US which I was compelled to make. I lived in Florence and its surrounding hills for a time back in the 1980s. Wonderful, wonderful memories.

    1. Yes, I can understand your desire to be in Italy, and I can imagine you have wonderful memories of living there. Although I would like to visit the less touristy places that we had intended to do in 2019. Florence would be one city I would revisit. They say it’s the olive oil that assists with longevity.

  2. Actually Suzanne, now I look closer, I think that photo batch is Rome. Hope you don’t mind me making these suggestions. 1. St Peters Square. 3. Not sure exactly where you were standing, but in the right background you can see the side of the Vittorio Emanuelle II monument, 4. I’m guessing that is the statue of Carlo Alberto in the Quirinale garden, and the final (5) is possibly a snip from the Trevi Fountain.

    1. I don’t mind at all. Thanks very much for pointing it out as we had been to both places. This post was about Les and his green shirt than highlighting Florence, Rome or Italy. No.2 was on a bus heading into the hills around Florence. No.5, I’m sure, isn’t in Rome, though no 1 is and the only photo of myself I wanted to include. I will amend my post.

    1. I’ve always been astounded at what we would wear while travelling and never at home. The green shirt was dropped into a charity store before we headed home 😊

  3. That shirt really did its job! We visited Florence on one of our trips, but prior to that we were on a bike/barge tour and one passenger liberally shared his cold with the rest of us. We felt pretty crappy during our short stay in Florence, but we did get to enjoy a few sights.
