It was a miracle that we arrived safely in the upper region of Spain after travelling in snowy conditions for what seemed like forever. Not thinking that snow would be an issue as we left coastal Spain, which was unseasonally cold then, through the interior of Spain heading to France. Mind you, the roads were always clear, even those in remote villages.

Obviously, if we had researched the areas, we would have been alerted to the weather conditions. After years of travelling, sometimes we wanted to be surprised and we were. We mainly had beautiful blue skies and snow-covered mountains and villages to admire.

The above image shows Ermita de los Nogales (Hermitage of the Walnut Trees) in Patones de Arriba, covered in snow. This hermitage is a small, historic religious building nestled in a picturesque mountainous setting, surrounded by other equally gorgeous snow-covered buildings.

We survived, and this part of Spain made a lasting impression on us.
So unusual to see it in snow, Suzanne. A lasting memory xx

It was beautiful with the skies so blue against the white snow and a novelty for us as here in the Bay of Plenty we don’t ever have snow. Spain is huge and so varied.

Nice photos. In my constant search for better photos, I am sometimes surprised how good some of my older ones are.

The older ones can have more meaning as time goes by.

I know what it’s like to be caught out by snow in Spain!

It’s an experience isn’t it. The roads are so superior to ours in NZ. Just had to remember to be on the right side, though Les is an excellent driver and soon it became next nature.

We had to follow a car with snow chains back in early 1980s.

That was quick thinking on the part of the driver. The roads were in such good condition and snow pushed to the road edges.

Beautiful photos. Driving in snow is fine if the roads are cleared. Not always the case here.

We really enjoyed that stage of our road trip having snowball fights was one of the highlights. The best was viewing the hawks gliding above us. That was an amazing experience. Our roads are so inferior compared to over there.

Beautiful! When I think of Spain, I certainly don’t picture snow.

Nice to know they do a good job of clearing the roads when it snows there.

It was impressive and the roads are a breeze to travel on. Very well maintained on the main arterial routes. Even some of the smaller villages the roads were good.

Not the weather I think of when I picture Spain! But that hermitage does look very pretty in the snow š

We have managed to dodge most of this yearās snow – so far it hasnāt come to Glasgow in any meaningful quantity. I can see its appeal as a novelty, but Iād rather do without!

Where’s the fun in dodging the snow. Those days on the road were more enjoyable than our stint in France during a snowy winter dog walking. Major weather event here at the moment, with slips taking out campers and houses. Not good.

We live on a hill, small and away from any cliff edge. Unfortunately, it was over at the beach at a motorcamp. We had over 160mm approx of rain within one day.
