Life at No.22, Snapshots of Tauranga

Snapshots of Tauranga #8

The most poignant local street art is on the corner of Durham and Spring Streets. A few years ago, while walking, we had the privilege of viewing its creation from the first spray of paint.

This street art was created by local artist Shane Walker.

The Kokaho

A young girl takes a walk in search of her friends.
Treading lightly on papatuanuku, she walks deep into the forest
Guided by all her friends
Passing the beautiful fauna and flora that grow within
She says, “We are all here to protect you, Kokako, my beautiful friend”.

The Kokako

This beautiful endangered North Island bird is a water carrier in Māori mythology. Carrying water in its wattle, this highly attractive mural highlights the importance of water as a precious resource and the hope of saving the planet and the endangered North Island Kokako.

Here’s hoping that we all take this thought on board no matter where we live; there are endangered birds and water conservation issues worldwide that must be addressed.

    1. Jo, it is beautiful and it was fun to see how the process started and the end result. Still looking fabulous and I need to get back there and take the whole thing in one piece. A bit tricky with traffic and it does go around the corner. Where’s a drone when you need one 😉

    1. Thanks Neil and yes it is a spectacular mural with a very important message. Hopefully the ones will resonate with the small child and grow more passionate about our environment. I think many are doing that now.

    1. He is a very talented artist and how he put it all together is stunning. Especially with all the storms we are having how fast our fresh water becomes tainted and undrinkable.
