Snapshots of Tauranga #21

A marine mollusc

Beach fossicking is fascinating.

Although it was much easier to squat at six years old than in our mid-sixties, exploring the unknown underneath those rocks and in crevices amongst the craggy sides around our shorelines is still a lot of fun.

There are no doubt countless chitons out there around the world.

It’s possible I didn’t turn over the suitable rock while travelling back then, or perhaps I didn’t pay enough attention when I did. But regardless, I stumbled upon this marine mollusc that completely captivated me. Its precision-engineered eight separate plates allow it to move and even roll into a ball.

They are genuinely fascinating creatures.

Another beach and another time – Les and the nieces

It looked like an unworldly creature that had us all googling it when we arrived back home.
The creature was a Pelagic Gooseneck Barnacle Lepas anatifera.
For goodness sake, don’t look at the camera.
