A-Z of NZ Locations – Lake Wanaka

Wanaka tree large

Water Reflections and that most-photographed tree.

This lonely tree has spread itself just offshore at the south end of Lake Wanaka and is framed by the South Island’s stunning Southern Alps.

Known as the “lone tree of Lake Wanaka,” it is said to be one of the most photographed trees in all of New Zealand. However, you still need to have the inside scoop to find it, as there are no signs directing people to the solitary tree. It’s just enough off the beaten path to not be bothered by too many tourists unless they’ve done their research.

Take a picnic and, if daring enough, have a swim in the Lake’s icy waters. If that doesn’t appeal, do what we did: find some stones and create an art form in between, absorbing those wonderful views.

As you can see, we still have that wee sculpture in our possession and have done so since 2008. It’s a reminder of life on the road and enjoying those opportunist moments.

  1. Very nice photos – you have a good eye for monochrome, I especially like the first tree photo. These photos remind me that I need to slow down even more when travelling.
